Does an apple a day actually keep the doctor away?

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Or does it? Researchers in the US have put the famous adage to the test in a study including over 8,000 people. Initial raw data suggests that people who ate one apple per day had a nine per cent lower chance of visiting the doctor several times a year. So it would appear that the old saying was right… only until other factors were considered in the results, that is, and then conclusions changed.

It was assumed that people who ate an apple every day were less likely to be smokers, and were usually more educated than those who didn’t partake. So with these ideas in play, it turned out that apple eaters were just as likely to go to the doctors.

Interestingly, they were less likely to use prescription medication. So we’re officially changing the saying: “An apple a day keeps the pharmacist at bay.” Catchy, right?
