Amal Clooney takes on Donald Trump in fiery speech

Amal Clooney was last spotted leaving Princess Eugenie’s royal wedding early to give an empowering speech about her work as a human rights lawyer at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women.

On Wednesday night, she came into the spotlight again at the United Nations Correspondents Association Awards, where she spoke sharply about President Donald Trump.

Amal, who was being honoured as the 2018 Global Citizen of the Year, criticised his mistreatment of journalists and the “chilling effect” it was having internationally.

She said that journalists around the globe are “under attack like never before” from autocratic regimes including North Korea, the Philippines, Hungary, Turkey and Brazil.

“The U.S. president has given such regimes a green light and labeled the press in this country the ‘enemy of the people,’” she said.

She also mentioned the tragic torture and death of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul October this year.

This is the first time Amal has come out against Trump so strongly, but she has previously made her feelings about the president and his influence known.

“The president of a country should not publicly ridicule a woman who has come forward to allege abuse,” she said at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women.

Amal and her husband George Clooney donated half a million dollars to March for Our Lives and joined one rally with students in Washington D.C in March.
