18 years on: Harrowing images show the true horror of the 9/11 attacks

Back on September 11th, 2001, New Yorkers were enjoying their Tuesday morning. Whether they were heading off to work and enjoying (or not) their morning commute or sending their kids off to school, it was just another ordinary day.

That is, until 8:46am, when two hijacked planes flew straight into the Twin Towers at the World Trade Centre in New York City.

The devastation reached the city, with 2,996 people killed and more than 6,000 injured, many of those being the hundreds of police officers and firefighters who rushed to help those out of the rubble of the destroyed buildings.

In less than two hours, the towers had been reduced to rubble.

Photographs captured on the day tell a story of a horrific tragedy as the city and the world tried to understand what was unfolding before them.

One particularly heartbreaking image is known as the “Falling Man”, taken by Richard Drew. This man jumped out of the window to escape the fires that had started within the buildings, and to this day, his identity is still unknown.
