How to save $2000 a year on groceries

Analysis from mySavvy Shopper has found the average Australian household can save $2,080 on their grocery bill each year with a couple of simple strategies.

These include stocking up on essentials when they’re marked down, bulk buying, using home brand products, discount chains and calculating the best deal on unit price.

Interestingly though, the analysis suggests specials might be putting up the price of you shop.

The survey, which asked 1,000 Australian shoppers about their shopping habits found 60 per cent of shoppers had purchased an item they hadn’t planned on getting.

Shoppers took home an average of five extra products each week, which despite being on special added $23.70 to their weekly bill – totalling more than $1,200 a year.

Overall the analysis found the key to saving on groceries was discipline and stock on “the right kinds of product when they’re good value”, while leaving others on the shelf, according to mySavvy Shopper managing director David Myles.

“Don’t go buying specials just because they’re heavily reduced, when you wouldn’t ordinarily buy them or they’re in addition to the shopping list.

“Many people also fall into the trap of thinking they’re making a great saving by buying products may have use/sell by dates that they’re not aware of.”

What’s your take? Do you think you will put this advice to use?
