Dame Julie Andrews in Brisbane to direct My Fair Lady

Dame Julie Andrews is in Brisbane as she prepares to open the Opera Australia’s stage production of My Fair Lady.

Directing the musical that made her a star more than 60 years after its debut on Broadway, Andrews says she has rediscovered “the wonder” of the beloved musical.

"Coming back to it after all this time is to rediscover the wonder of the show," Andrews said.

"Who would've thought a story about a professor of phonetics would result in it being probably one of the greatest shows ever for musical theatre?"

The 81-year-old actress, who played Eliza Doolittle in the original 1956 stage production, said she felt a sense of pride and nostalgia coming back to the musical.

"I've just had the joy of recreating it as it was originally, so that you can see the way it really was, and also finding some new things, freshening some looks occasionally or a take on a line or something like that," she said.

My Fair Lady opens at QPAC in Brisbane on Saturday March 19 and runs until April 30.
