New free range egg laws start today

Consumers who are frustrated by confusing egg label packaging have been afforded a bit of relief by new free range egg laws, which are set to be introduced today.

ABC News reports all free range egg producers in Australia will now have to adhere to a new information standard which will be applied under Australian consumer law.

Producers who fail to comply can be prosecuted by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Free range producers who use the label must ensure hens have “meaningful and regular” access to and outdoor range during daylight hours, where they are free to roam and rummage.

They’re also limited to 10,000 hens per hectare of land, the equivalent of one hen per square metre.

What are your thoughts? Do you think this is the right call?
