Millions of Aussies at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning

Millions of Australians are at risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, and with winter just around the corner are being encouraged to check their home appliances.

9news.com.au reports Vanessa Robinson, who lost her two children to CO poisoning in 2010 from an un-serviced gas heater at their rental property, is now doing everything she can to raise awareness about the silent killer lurking in homes across the country.

“We just want to help people stay safe and sound within their homes,” she told 9NEWS.

“There’s no or very little knowledge about carbon monoxide alarms that you can purchase and place inside your home to give you early warning of carbon monoxide levels.”

A recent study of Aussie homes found Victorians most at risk of CO poisoning, and staggeringly found that almost half of homeowners were unaware what carbon monoxide is.

CO is difficult to notice, but can prompt symptoms like headaches, nausea and fatigue.

“It can just present like a flu kind of illness, or a gastro kind of illness,” Doctor Barbara Robertson told 9news.com.au.

“It happens very quietly, and very insidiously. It can result in very nasty outcomes.”
