9 unusual hacks to make your clothes last longer
If you want your clothes to last longer than one season, the first step is to buy better quality items.
But once you’ve invested your hard-earned cash, the last thing you want is a scuffed shoe or a few missing buttons to ruin your look.
With a few items from around the house you can keep your clothes in better shape, saving you money (and trips to the shops) in the long run.
1. Bread
If you’ve got dry-clean only woollens, you can use balled up bread to remove stains such as lipstick.
2. White vinegar
If you have marks on your leather clothing or shoes, you can buff them off with some white vinegar on a clean cloth.
3. Nail polish
Clear nail polish not only looks good on your fingers, it can also be a quick way to stop small snags from going further. Use it to stop a run in your stockings in its tracks or even to keep a loose thread on a button from coming unstuck.
4. Newspaper
If you haven’t got shoe polish on hand, you can buff up leather shoes with some balled up newspaper. Also stuff balled up newspaper into wet shoes to dry them out.
5. Soap
If you have some jeans or a jacket with a sticky (or stuck!) zipper, grab a bar of soap. Rub it along both sides of the zip and you’ll be able to use it much more easily.
6. Scourer
Use the rough side to remove pilling from your jumpers, just move it lightly along to make them look new again.
7. Clothes hangers
Not just for clothing, grab yourself a hanger with 2 or 3 rungs (the ones made for trousers) and use it to organise your jewellery.
8. Pillow case
If you are packing away or hanging up a special item of clothing, cover it with a pillow case first to protect it. Cut a hole in the top to allow the hook of the coat hanger to come through.
9. Milk
If you’ve got an ink stain on your favourite shirt, soak it in milk overnight and then launder as usual.
