A quick guide to growing vegetables indoors

If you love the thought of growing your own vegetables, but lack the garden space to do so, you can still enjoy the satisfaction of harvesting your own crops by starting miniature veggie gardens indoors.

Where in the house?

Sunny windowsills are great for small pots, while “suntrap” rooms in your house are great for larger containers. Have an unused dark cupboard? That’s perfect for growing mushrooms.

What to grow

Tomatoes will grow well on a sunny windowsill. Train a cordon variety like Sweet Million up a cane and hopefully it will produce many delicious, beautiful tomatoes for several months.

Carrots and radishes, while root vegetables, can still be grown to great effect indoors. Round or globe varieties of each will do well in troughs, boxes or pans.

Potatoes can be easily grown in large pots, buckets, or even sacks. Utilise the same seed tubers you would usually use outside, and make sure to leave space at the top of your container to add more compost as the plants develop.

Mushrooms can be grown, as stated earlier, in a dark, draft-free place. You can even find specially prepared bags of compost with mushroom spawn that will only need a watering before being left alone. Try to maintain a temperature of 10 to 15°C.
