6 flower hacks to make them last longer

There is something so lovely about having fresh flowers in your home. Whether they come from the garden or from the florist, you want to ensure that they look their best and last as long as possible. With that in mind, we’ve pulled together six ideas for giving your flowers a bit of extra love, all by using bits and bobs from around the house.

1. Scissors

Begin by trimming the ends of the stems, removing any brown parts. If you do this every other day once the flowers are on display, it will allow the stems to soak up more nutrients and keep them looking fresh. Also pull off any of the foliage that will be submerged in the water, as this will ensure your water stays clean for longer.

2. Bleach

Add a tiny splash of bleach to your water (along with the flower food that they sell at the florist) to keep the water clean.

3. Lemonade

Here’s another option for flowers that last the distance – tip half a cup of lemonade into your water. The sugar makes the blooms last longer. If you haven’t got any lemonade, a big spoonful of sugar dissolved in your vase water will do the trick.

4. Water

Yes, yes, of course you know your flowers need water. But here’s a tip – pop some water in a spray bottle and give your flowers a spritz each day. They love this additional moisture and will reward you with staying power.

5. Aspirin

Yet another option for your water in the vase – add a crushed soluble aspirin tablet for a boost for your plants.

6. Hairspray

This might sound strange, but you can actually keep your gorgeous blooms in place by giving them a little spritz of hairspray from about 20cm away.

How do you keep your flowers looking their best? We would love to hear from you in the comments.
