10 uses for vinegar in the garden
The humble household staple vinegar works magic in the garden too. Here are 10 ways to use vinegar as an eco-friendly herbicide, fungicide and insecticide in the garden.
- Kill unwanted weeds growing in the cracks and crevices of pavement by pouring white vinegar on them.
- Deter ants by spraying white vinegar along known ant trails.
- Preserve a bouquet of fresh cut flower by adding 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of sugar to water in a vase.
- Clean rust and sterilise garden tools by soaking in undiluted vinegar overnight.
- Give plastic patio furniture a new lease on life by cleaning with a solution of one tablespoon of white vinegar to four litres of water.
- If slugs and snails are causing problems in the vegetable garden, spray them directly with an undiluted vinegar concoction.
- Keep stray cats at bay by spraying full-strength vinegar around the edges of your garden.
- Give acid-loving plants (like azaleas, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, and gardenias) a boost by watering with mixture of a cup of white vinegar to four litres of water.
- Clean clay pots by filling them with a third of vinegar and two-thirds of cold water. Let pots soak until stains are lifted and then wash with soap and water.
- Make a fruit fly trap by combining a small bowl of vinegar with a few drops of liquid dishwasher.
