Perth woman finds maggots in popular Aldi product

A Perth woman has made an unsightly discovery, finding maggots in the packaging of a popular brand of dark chocolate purchased from discount supermarket Aldi.

Mary, who reportedly did not wish to reveal her surname, had purchased the dark chocolate from Aldi’s Joondalup store on Saturday as a little treat.

“I was cutting away until I saw a white thing moving against the dark chocolate, and yep it was a live maggot,” she said.

“I only saw it as it was against the dark chocolate. If it was white chocolate (it) would have been a different story.”

As Mary opened the rest of the packet, she saw it was covered in “webbing”.

“I called Aldi on the Monday… since I kept the product and had my receipt, I was asked to go back into a store and get a refund.”

Aldi has responded to the incident, arguing that the larva in the chocolate was not a maggot, but an Indian Meal Moth.

“Our investigation has confirmed that this is an isolated incident,” Aldi said in a statement.

“We have been in touch with the customer and as with all products, if the customer has an issue, we will offer a full refund.”
