Coles makes bizarre apology about its roast chickens

Supermarkets live and die by their ability to see a roast chook, which might just be the reason why Coles decided to take an advert out in a local Victorian newspaper to backtrack on a bold claim about its chickens.

News.com.au reports the advert backtracked on claims the chickens sold by the supermarket are 100 per cent Australia.

“In the Coles catalogue on sale 4th April, we have advertised Lilydale Hot Roast Chicken as ‘Always 100 per cent Aussie’,” the statement says.

“We regret to advise that the stuffing contains some imported ingredients, and the product is 97 per cent Australian.

“We apologise for any confusion or inconvenience caused.”

A Coles spokesperson clarified the statement to News.com.au: “Lilydale hot roast chickens are 100 per cent Australian-grown birds. A number of the ingredients in the stuffing and marinade, primarily herbs and spices, are from imported sources.”

The same is true for Woolies chickens.

“At Woolworths our macro roast chicken and traditional roast chickens are all 100 per cent Australian grown poultry,” the Woolworths spokeswoman added.

“There are some imported ingredients such as spices in the seasoning and stuffing.”

Do you think this is the right move?
