DIY: Make your own dog bed

Any dog owners will tell you that dog beds can cost a fortune and they often don’t look very aesthetically pleasing. But there’s an easy solution to that problem: make your own. They’re fun to make, look great and will be sure to please you and your dog. Plus, this way you can create a personalised one just for your pooch. Here are four DIY dog bed ideas that will keep your furry friend comfy at night and cost you next to nothing.

Make it from scratch

Pick a comfy covering fabric like faux fur, terry cloth or cotton. Mix and match prints to suit your (or your pooch’s) personal taste. Decide on the stuffing like an old pillow, foam, mattress topper or anything that is comfortable to lie on. Cut fabric into the shape you’d like the bed to be and sew around all edges except one bit – big enough to insert the stuffing through and then turn the fabric inside out so that the sewn edges are concealed. Next, insert into fabric and neatly hand sew the opening. Voila, a personalised doggy bed.

Vintage suitcases

Do you have an empty suitcase lying around? Don’t leave it collecting dust in the garage, turn it into a chic dog bed. Choose one that is big enough to fit your pet comfortably. Cut foam to fit into suitcase – add multiple layers for extra comfort. Cover with fun fabric and tuck into edges.

Four-poster bed

Let your pooch sleep in style with an old side table turned upside down. Now you’ve got the frame for a mini four-poster bed. With a little paint and a cushion, your dog will have a four poster bed fit for any royal canine.

Drawer

Pick up an old dresser from an op-shop, give it a sand down, a paint job and decorate. Add fluffy fabrics and cushions and you’re dog has a cute vintage bed.
