Divorced dads banned from leaving Australia until they pay child support

A wealthy mining magnate has been stopped from boarding a first-class fight overseas due to his six-month child support debt.

The father who is based in the Mediterranean, was attempting to fly out of Sydney when Border Force officials ordered him to repay his six-month debt of $22,000.

This dad follows 1800 dads banned from leaving the country until they pay the child support money owed to their ex-wives.

These wealthy divorced fathers are being targeted by a Turnbull government crackdown which saw the Immigration Department and child support officers join forces to catch the men as they attempt to leave the county.

One dad owed over $100,000 to two different children. The Immigration Department informed the Human Services Department that the man occasionally returns to Australia for short visits.

The next time the man arrived in Perth, he received a Departure Prohibition Order barring him from leaving Australia until he paid his debt.

He immediately paid $20,000 and made a payment plan to pay the remaining $80,000.

An Australian father who lives overseas was stopped from flying out of Sydney Airport for his child support debt. After he paid the $30,000 he could rebook another flight.

The Turnbull government has started matching the files of dads with child support debt with the files held by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

Human Services Minister Alan Tudge said a third Departure Prohibition Order team was created to track down parents evading their payments while living a lavish style of travel.

Mr Tudge said some parents went to “great lengths to avoid their financial responsibilities”.
