4 tips for colouring your hair at home

You can’t always make it to the salon for a colour treatment and with the new advances in at-home hair colour you can fear not. A great result can be yours, with just a little bit of careful preparation.

A great colour can help boost volume and shine, brighten your complexion, cover greys (if that’s what you want) and give you a spring in your step. Here’s how to ensure a great result every time.

1. Choose your shade carefully

Extremely light or dark shades can look very harsh and ageing against mature skin. The best shade to choose to flatter your age and complexion is one two to three shades lighter than your natural colour. This softens your face, gently diffusing lines and age spots and also prevents the dreaded highly noticeable roots.

2. Add highlights

It may sound scary but adding highlights is not only a great way to frame your face and boost skin but is also incredibly easy to do at home. Choose a shade two of three shades lighter than the bulk of your hair and always opt for something with warm undertones usually inferred with words like golden, honey or amber. Aim for about 10 ½ cm streaks on each side of your head, beginning 1cm or so back from the face and evenly paced apart until just past your ears.

3. Concentrate on your roots

When we are younger, our hair is naturally lightest at the ends. Re-create this effect by applying dye to your roots but not the ends as they soak up colour far more quickly. During the last 3 minutes of processing, splash water onto the top of your head and comb the colour through from top to bottom. This dilutes the dye and creates a uniform, natural looking colour throughout.

4. Employ heat

Heat opens the hair cuticle. It’s why we often have our head wrapped in a hot towel when a hair mask is applied. Utilise this technique by warming an old towel in the dryer and wrapping it around your head after applying dye. This allows the formula to soak into stubborn grey hairs.
