Princess Mary steps out in rare outfit as she celebrates milestone

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark swapped her usual sophisticated high glamour wardrobe for a traditional army uniform as she was named captain of the Danish home guard yesterday.

The 47-year-old royal looked suave as she marched swiftly at the base in Nymindegab, South-west Jutland, to receive the prestigious honour as her mother-in-law Queen Margrethe proudly looked on in support.

The Tasmanian born royal went for an understated look for the ceremony, with a neatly tied ponytail, simple makeup and a racing green beret as she watched as troops paraded before she was awarded with the honour.

Princess Mary was joined by over 500 troops for the special event, which marks 70 years since the country’s Home Guard was established.

The mother-of-four watched proudly as the received the official title as captain of the Danish Home Guard at the military base, just a short few days after returning from Ethiopia.

The royal trip was used by the Princess as a means to discuss gender inequality, as well as the rights opportunities of young girls and women.

Along with the Danish development minister, Ulla Tørnæs, Princess Mary met with local female decision-makers, leaders, business representatives, officials and entrepreneurs during her two-day trip in the East African country.

This visit comes one year after Denmark launched its first national campaign in Ethiopia.
