How to make your make-up last all day
Perfecting a make-up look takes time, effort, and quite a bit of cash, too. So, there’s nothing more disappointing than checking in the mirror at afternoon tea only to realise you’re almost bare-faced. To help you get the most out of your beauty products, we’ve found some tips to ensure your makeup looks as good at 8pm as it did at 8am.
1. Exfoliate – Because we shed dead skin cells throughout the day, if you haven’t exfoliated prior to applying makeup, whatever products you do put on aren’t likely to stay.
2. Hydrate – When your skin is dry, whatever makeup you’ve applied will collect into any wrinkles or fine lines. Apply a long-lasting, high-SPF moisturiser before your makeup to prevent this happening.
3. Prime – Using a primer after moisturising and before applying makeup will give your skin a smooth, even base to work on. Because it prevents product being absorbed into the skin, your makeup will stay on much longer.
4. Long-wear – Opt for long-wear lipsticks, foundations, mascara and whatever else you can get your hands on. They’re formulated specifically to last, which is ideal if you’ve got a big day or long night ahead.
5. Set – Setting your makeup is just as important as using a primer. You may be used to applying powder to the t-zone only, but a good rule of thumb is to apply it all over your face. If you need something stronger, setting spray is the solution.
6. Don’t touch – We all touch our faces every day without even realising it, but doing so makes your face oilier and strips it of makeup. Try to be mindful of any contact to your face, and if it’s a real problem for you, find something else to distract you, like stretching your fingers.
7. Don’t reapply – You may think adding extra powder throughout the day is making your makeup last longer, but it’s actually doing the opposite. Layer upon layer of powder not only looks cakey, but dehydrates and adds weight to your skin.
