Helen Mirren gets candid about ageing: “Growing old is not for p*****s!”

As Helen Mirren joins an all-star cast of over 50s for a new L’Oréal campaign, the actress has opened up about her experience of ageing.

The cosmetics company recruited Mirren along with Jane Fonda, Julianne Moore, Isabelle Adjani, Iris Berben and Vanessa Williams to appear in the new campaign for the Age Perfect range.

For the campaign, Mirren, 72, is seen sporting a golden biker jacket with a black dress, pink socks and red heels.

In the photo, Mirren links arms with fellow actresses, Jane Fonda, 80, and Julianne Moore, 57.

In an interview with The Telegraph about the campaign, Mirren said: “You do have to be brave. When people say 'getting old is not for pussies’, there’s a certain amount of truth to that.”

“When I was in my late 30s, my mother gave me some fantastic advice. ‘Never be afraid of getting old,’ she said, ‘because when you’re 20 the idea of being 35 is horrific. When you’re 35 the idea of being 55 is a nightmare, but as you get older you realise that you have the tools to deal with it.’”

The star also praised the brand for not overlooking the senior demographic of women.

“I am genuinely very excited about the L’Oréal Age Perfect Foundation because for the best part of my later life I have been looking for a foundation that suits the kind of skin you have as you get older so having a foundation that doesn’t settle into the wrong places, that has great staying power and at the same time doesn’t look heavy is just wonderful.”

Recently, Mirren also revealed another one of her beauty tricks – getting her eyebrows tattooed on.

The actress confessed she was “fed up” with her sparse brows and said she has noticed a “huge difference” in her confidence since getting them done.

“I was fed up of my brows barely being there and when one of my girlfriends got it done, I thought that they looked great,” she said.

“They're very lightly and delicately done — but it means that when I get up in the morning and I have no make-up on, at least I have eyebrows. It's made a huge difference.”
