6 old-fashioned beauty myths busted

We’ve all heard them – those beauty superstitions that stop us plucking, primping and preening. But just how much truth is in these old wives’ tales? Let’s find out.

1. You can’t smell your own perfume – FACT

Surprisingly, this one’s for real. If you’ve got a signature scent that you wear every day, your nose can become numb to it. This might lead to going a little overboard with the spritzing, though, so always keep in mind that others CAN smell it.

2. Plucking one grey hair will leave two more in its place – MYTH

This one’s kept women away from the tweezers for decades, but thankfully, it’s completely false. However, constantly plucking grey hairs might actually do the opposite, damaging the follicle to the point where the hair won’t grow back at all! And no one wants a bald spot, right?

3. Shaving makes hair grow back darker and thicker – MYTH

We’re happy to inform you that this one is total bull. Shaving is literally just trimming hair, and when you trim the hair on your head, it doesn’t change colour or thickness, does it? It’s just the blunt angle at which you shave that leads to that dark, thick look.

4. Whiten teeth with baking soda – FACT

We were shocked at this one, too. Throw away those expensive whitening toothpastes and simply mix half baking soda and half water. Using your toothbrush, apply it to your teeth and the abrasive effect will remove surface stains like coffee or red wine.

5. After X amount of time, your hair will clean itself – MYTH

Who hasn’t heard some version of this myth at least once in their lives? Unfortunately – or fortunately for those around you that possess the ability of scent – your locks will never magically wash themselves. Our natural oils are great for hair, but you’ll still need to clean it regularly.

6. Split-ends are fixable – MYTH

Sadly, no. If your ends are split, they’re split – there’s nothing you can do about it except book an appointment with your hairdresser and get the chop. In the meantime, you can reduce that dry, brittle look by applying a smoothing, conditioning hair product.
