8 things mentally strong people never do

Encourage a healthy mind with these eight simple tips to help build your mental strength. They are the eight top tips of those who are strong of mind.

1. They don’t feel sorry for themselves

Nothing good comes from self-pity. It’s a fact of life that bad things will happen to you and you will be unfairly treated, but dwelling on it won’t change things. Strong people will be quick to accept the situation and move on, without wasting too much time. That’s not to say that you aren’t allowed a little burst of emotion when something bad happens – the key is to know when to stop.

2. They don’t dwell on mistakes

In much the same vein, everyone is going to make mistakes. Many people have a tendency to beat themselves up over these mistakes, no matter how minor they are. This is destructive behaviour and doesn’t achieve anything. Instead, try to look at mistakes as an opportunity to learn. Then let them go. There is nothing to be gained from continuing to punish yourself.

3. They don’t hang around negative people

It’s hard to be strong if you are surrounded by negative people, who constantly suck energy from you. Negative people want others to participate in their misery and will often try to draw you in to conversations about how terrible your lives are. Mentally strong people know to surround themselves with people who boost them up, not those who bring them down.

4. They don’t resist change

Change can be frightening, but it can also be incredibly positive. It can seem easier to stick with what you know, even if it doesn’t fulfill your needs, because the alternative is too scary or too hard. Trust us, it’s not worth it. Mentally strong people embrace change, are open to new opportunities and are always willing to take a chance. You never know what you could discover.

5. They don’t worry about pleasing everyone

You are never going to make everybody happy. Trying to please everyone usually means you end up pleasing no one, particularly yourself. While we’re not saying that you shouldn’t be considerate of other people’s feelings, ultimately you need to do what is best for you. Don’t be afraid to say no and if someone else gets upset, understand that it is not your responsibility.

6. They don’t resent other people’s successes

Jealousy is one of the most basic human emotions – and it can be pretty hard to resist. But remember, nothing good comes from the green-eyed monster. Other people’s success has no impact on your own and should be celebrated. Strong people are able to recognise that success comes from hard work and that everyone is entitled to their own reward. Yours will come.

8. They don’t fear being alone

Alone doesn’t have to mean lonely. Strong people enjoy their own company and know that a little solitude can be good for the soul. Don’t become dependent on others for your own strength. You are more than enough.
