Research links diabetes to long-term cognitive decline

New research has made a stunning link between diabetes and long-term cognitive decline, suggesting a correlation between blood sugar levels and brain function.

The study, completed by scientists at the School of Public Health Imperial College London and Peking University Clinical Research institute and published in the Diabetologia journal, suggests higher levels of glycated haemogloblin could results in a higher rate of decline in executive function, cognitive function and memory.

"Our study provides evidence to support the association of diabetes with subsequent cognitive decline," researcher Dr Wuxiang Xie said.

"Our findings suggest that interventions that delay diabetes onset, as well as management strategies for blood sugar control, might help alleviate the progression of subsequent cognitive decline over the long term."
