9 ways to boost your energy right now

There are tons of things out there that can sap us of our energy, from a lack of sleep to falling into an afternoon lull. Often it happens at the most inconvenient time, so to help you re-energise without a caffeine hit (though that wouldn’t be a bad idea!) we’ve got nine easy-peasy tips to help you instantly lose that foggy feeling.

1. See red – According to a number of studies, looking at something red (like some flowers, a piece of art or even just a book) when you’re feeling tired can help you refocus and become more detail-oriented.

2. Get some gum – Scientists have proven that chewing gum when you feel your energy level dip can make you more alert.

3. Power nap – A 10- to 30-minute nap in the afternoon has been found to give siesta-lovers a significant boost in energy. Just don’t exceed 30 minutes, or you’ll just feel worse.

4. Move, move, move – Having a nice big stretch can quickly energise you (as can yoga), but anything that gets the blood pumping won’t hurt either.

5. Adjust your posture – It might sound strange, but researchers from San Francisco State University found that people who slouched experienced a bigger energy drop than those who sat up straight.

6. Get outside – Moving from darkness or artificial light into the sunshine for just 15 minutes will instantly energise you.

7. Laugh – A fit of giggles is enough to wake up even the most lethargic person, a new study shows.

8. Cool down – A low body temperature is a fast track to sleep, so if you want to stay awake and alert, turn the heater off and put the air con on.

9. Eat some nuts – They’re delicious, satisfying, and can even give you a quick energy boost. Because they contain magnesium, your body is able to better break down glucose into energy.
