Counting bars optical illusion

This simple visual challenge, requiring you to count the amount of bars in the illustration, seems simple enough. But is it?

Count the bars from their bases and you'll get eight of them, but count them at their top ends and you get seven. Try it out for yourself.

It seems clear when looking at the image from the furthest to the closest bars, the spaces between them increase. However, try to make sense of the individual lines and it soon becomes a brain-fuddling disaster.

The answer is that there are five complete bars in a row, then an additional bar at the end. The rest of the lines are visual trickery.
