8 healthy ways to deal with stress

It’s so easy to become stressed, but easing out of it isn’t quite so simple. So when someone posted a question on Reddit asking for people to share their foolproof, healthy stress-relief secrets, we couldn’t resist taking a look.

Here are 8 of their best responses.

1. Reboot your mind

“I make a huge effort to program my mind. What you tell yourself is likely to manifest. Consciousness is the key determining factor of your reality. Do what you need to do. Just knock it out. Meditate – relax each muscle in your body and relax your mind. As thoughts come to you, acknowledge them, and let them go. Just stay positive and keep the future you want in mind.”

2. Hit the gym

“Running or any kind of physical exercise... It’s a proven fact that releases the same kind of ‘happiness’ hormones as Xanax and other pills. Also, go to the gym and punch that punching bag really bad, until you are tired.”

3. Take some “me” time

If I’m feeling overwhelmed by life or work I will take one of my sick days and just relax. No chores, no errands, no responsibilities. Just go down to the water with a little picnic (phone off) and lay with my dog. That seems to be my reset button when anxiety gets the best of me.”

4. Turn to your furry friend

“I pet or play with my dog. He can also sense if I’m getting stressed, so he will come and put his head on my lap to pet him.”

5. Get cooking

“Cook a complex meal with several dishes. It’s pretty focusing and definitely keeps you in the moment while your subconscious considers the issue at hand – lot of steps that need to come together so everything finishes at the same time and due to timing, you can’t really let your mind/focus get off the topic of bringing everything together. Once it’s done, you have a feeling of accomplishment, and a good meal to eat while you ponder the issues that stressed you out in the first place.”

6. Help out others

“I try to make other people happy. Hold doors, help people pick up dropped items, that kinda thing. Makes me feel so good to see other people feel good.”

7. Drink some water and breathe

“Stay hydrated. Being dehydrated will make you feel like shit. If your body is not well it's hard to keep your mind well. Also, fresh air. Even if you just sit on the porch for 10 minutes. Also, proper breathing. Anxiety is a process. Make sure you are not holding your breath. You'll be surprised how much better you will feel if you breathe properly.”

8. Get crafty

“Cross-stitching, sounds like a grandma kind of advice but it works wonders, especially when combined with calming songs. When I’m doing it, I can’t think about anything else.”
