5 ways you can be a better person

Throughout our lives, we are constantly changing. We grow, we learn, we come to understand more. In short, we’re on a years’ long journey to be better. There are times, however, when we seem to stagnate. Some call it a rut, others label it a funk. Whatever you want to call it, it means you’re not moving forward. If you feel like your journey has ground to a halt, here are some helpful hints to get you back on track to be a better person.

1. Build better habits

Break out of that daily routine and do something that’s genuinely good for you and your body. Skip the post-dinner snack and have fruit with your morning coffee instead of biscuits. Or join a fitness group to keep yourself active.

2. “Feed the birds, tuppence a bag”

Whatever you’re doing, try to be on the lookout for ways you can be helpful to others. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in our own worlds that we can’t even see past the length of our own noses. Being helpful to other people will not only make someone else’s day, it will give you a sense of purpose and fulfilment every time.

3. Everybody hurts

The modern world, with its excess of social media and a lightning fast news cycle, it’s easy to get stuck in a bubble of our own perspective. Because of this, the quest to understand the experiences and perspectives of others is vital if society is to move forward in a functional manner. You don’t have to agree with others to be empathetic, but you do need to try and put yourself in their shoes and better understand why what they believe is important to them.

4. Life is for learning

If you want to be better in everything you do, then you should strive to be always learning new things. This doesn’t have to be formal education, though taking classes is always a good thing. Read books from the library on subjects you know little about, watch documentaries, seek out experts and speak with them.

5. A change is gonna come

If you truly wish to be a better person, you have to be willing to change. Large, fundamental changes aren’t possible overnight, but small adjustments in your thinking, habits, and lifestyle can help you be better – mind, body and soul. But only if you let them.

What’s something you’ve done to make yourself better?
