Emotional video of three deaf people hearing family for first time

In an incredibly emotional video, three deaf people from Puerto Princesa, one of the poorest areas in the Philippines, were overwhelmed after being able to hear their friends and families’ voices for the first time in their lives.

Streaming music service Spotify and hearing aid manufacturer Starkey Hearing Foundation partnered together for the First Song campaign, which provides state-of-the-art hearing aids and music to poor communities in the Philippines.

The video introduces us to three very different people, showing snippets of their daily life and movingly, an insight into a world of limited sound.

28-year-old Eugene has been deaf since he was a baby but as a tuk-tuk driver loves blasting his music to attract customers. Then there’s Isagani, a father of three children who all play instrument, and his sole wish is to hear the music they create. And then teenager, Jessa Mae, who spends her life by the ocean but has never heard the sounds of waves.

It’s an emotional and tear-jerking video, as well as a good reminder of how deafness profoundly impacts people’s lives.
