The different types of hearing loss explained

One in six Australians suffers from hearing loss. While it can occur within any age group, it is older people that are more likely to be hearing impaired.

Hearing can be tested to determine the type of hearing problem, which can then help with treatment.

Conductive hearing loss

This is when the hearing loss is due to problems within the ear canal, eardrum, or middle ear.

Caused by:

Depending on the nature of the cause, treatment can include simple medications, hearing aids or surgery to correct the issue.

Sensorineural hearing loss

Also known as nerve-related hearing loss, this is when hearing loss is due to problems within the inner ear.

Caused by:

Treatment varies but can include the use of steroids, hearing aids, surgery or cochlear implants.

Mixed hearing loss

A combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, so both the middle and inner ear are affected.
