The questions everyone needs to ask their loved ones before it’s too late

Too often after they’re gone, we find ourselves wishing that we had taken the time to get to know our parents or grandparents better. However, when they are still in our lives, making the effort to find out more about them can feel awkward if you don’t know what you would ask if given the chance. The below questions are a great way to find out more while you still can. Ask them all, or use some as a conversational springboard – you might be surprised at how easily conversation flows once it gets going.

  1. What were your hobbies while you were growing up?
  2. What’s your favourite childhood memory?
  3. What was the most important thing you learned from your parents?
  4. What do you wish you had said to your parents?
  5. What memory makes you most proud?
  6. What was it like to be around when ___ (choose a historical moment you want to know more about)?
  7. What’s a trend or fad you got swept up in as a teenager?
  8. What is the biggest difference about your childhood compared to mine?
  9. What was your highest level of education?
  10. Who was the biggest influence in your life – aside from family members?
  11. What was your favourite book growing up?
  12. When did you first feel like an adult?
  13. Who was your first friend?
  14. How would you like to be remembered?
  15. What was your first job?
  16. What period of your life was your happiest?
  17. What is one piece of advice you would give to everyone in the world?

What question would you most want to ask your parents? Tell us in the comments!
