Lisa Wilkinson rushed home from holiday for urgent surgery

TODAY show host Lisa Wilkinson has been rushed home for surgery, after the 57-year-old TV personality broke her arm in two places while holidaying in Europe.

The incident occurred on Thursday, when the journalist slipped in the shower of her Amalfi Coast hotel room, snapping her arm in two separate places.

In an interview with The Huffington Post, the TV personality described the pain as, “More agony than I've ever felt, outside of child-birth.”

Her co-host Karl Stefanovic broke the news on the TODAY program this morning, “We just wanted to send lots of love to Lisa this Monday morning after her fall in Italy on Friday. Now Lisa has broken her arm in two places and has had to cut her holiday short to come home for surgery."

Sylvia Jeffreys added, "Yeah, not quite the mid-winter break that she was hoping for. It's a pretty nasty injury. We can't wait to see you back here at the desk when you are fit and ready to do so and in the meantime we are sending you lots of love and hugs and we wanna make sure you get well soon."

Wilkinson saw the funny side of things when she shared the news on Instagram with the following post:

She wrote, “Arrivederci #ltaly...you were fabulous (except for that whole falling over on the slippery wet marble floor thing).

“Bye-bye pool I never got to swim in. Bye-bye warm weather...

“Next stop: Sydney and my date with the surgeon's knife. Fun times!!”

Wilkinson’s partner, Peter Fitzsimmons posted an update on Twitter this morning, letting fans know that the two had returned safe from the Mediterranean.

Our thoughts are with Lisa, we hope the surgery goes well!
