Former Prime Minister Bob Hawke admitted to hospital

On Monday afternoon, former Prime Minister Bob Hawke was admitted to Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital.

Mr Hawke’s condition was unknown, but he is currently undergoing treatment in hospital, reported the Daily Telegraph.

News.com.au reported that the 88-year-old has been sick for some time, however, initial suggestions he had a stroke or pneumonia were incorrect.

Mr Hawke’s wife, Blanche d’Alpuget, confirmed to the Daily Telegraph that her husband was “OK”.

Labor sources revealed that Mr Hawke was in hospital for tests and it was “nothing serious”.

Mr Hawke was appointed as Australia’s 23rd Prime Minister from 1983-1991.

He had many signature achievements while in office, including the creation of Medicare and the initiation of national superannuation.

In recent years he has faced serious health battles, such as a pneumonia scare in 2011 and a serious overseas illness in 2015.

Since leaving office, Mr Hawke has maintained his ties with politics. Last week, he attended the swearing-in ceremony for new Western Australia governor Kim Beazley, at Government House in Perth.
