Barry Humphries suffers agonising fall

Barry Humphries has shared a health update with fans after a broken hip left him in "agony".

The 89-year-old comedian behind the character Dame Edna Everage had a drastic fall which saw him undergo surgery, and is recovering well with the help of "very painful" but regular physiotherapy.

Dubbing himself "Bionic Bazza" after receiving a titanium hip as a result of his accident, Barry says he is recovering in a clinic in the eastern suburbs of Sydney.

He is well on the road to recovery, and told Sydney Morning Herald he is "adamant" he will be better for his one man show later this year.

"I sit a lot in the show, and there's a bit of pacing... I don't think it's going to be a problem, but I do have to get on with my physio," he said.

Barry described his incident as "the most ridiculous thing, like all domestic incidents are," as he recalled, "I was reaching for a book, my foot got caught on a rug or something, and down I went."

Humphries said he wanted to ease his fans' fears and assure them he's "on the mend" and his "trajectory is up", and also advised them to avoid breaking their hip if possible.

"The medical bills were bloody enormous," he said.

"I strongly advise not breaking your hip!"
