We Kiwis like to think of ourselves as a hardworking and active bunch, but a damning new study might just have proven otherwise. Researchers from Stanford University have collected smartphone pedometer data from over 700,000 people around the world to find out which countries are the most active and which are the laziest. What they found might surprise you.

Indonesians came in the worst, with its population averaging just 3,513 steps a day, followed by Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and the Philippines. Hong Kong landed the title of the most active country, racking up 7,000 steps per day (around 6km).

So what about New Zealand? Ranked as the 12th laziest, we’re only clocking up an average of 4,582 steps a day – less than half the recommended 10,000.
