Herbal remedies that have stood the test of time

With a trend for all things natural and organic, we have seen more and more people seek the advice of naturopaths in recent times and even turn to good-old herbal remedies for wellness. While this should never be in place of consulting your doctor, it doesn’t hurt to also try the natural route as well. Here are some of our favourite…

Problem: Poor quality of sleep

Try… chamomile as it contains a range of components with anti-stress properties. It’s also an effective mild sedative. Either opt for an organic chamomile tea or buy the dried flowers. Add two teaspoons to 100ml of water. Steep and cover for three minutes. The reason that it’s good to cover the water is the active compounds are in the essential oils, which can dissipate if exposed.

Problem: Upset stomach

Try… ginger, because it has antispasmodic and anti-nausea properties. For years people have been using ginger to curb nausea and vomiting. Try a teaspoon of grated ginger in hot water and be sure to not make it too weak, as you will miss out on its therapeutic benefits.

Problem: Tension headache

Try… Magnesium. Also, using aromatherapy oils is another great way to ease a sore head. Try by rubbing oil into the nape of the neck and temples.

Problem: Feeling stressed

Try… withania. As most of usare multi-tasking at a million miles an hour, ouradrenal glands can get really exhausted and then you burn out and get run down. This herb can help to look after the nervous system and the adrenals.

Problem: Low on energy

Try… acai berry. Talked about a lot recently, the power-packed Amazon acai berry can boost your energy. Really great for busy people, try it in powdered form either added to a juice or on cereal, or in a capsule.

Problem: Eczema

Try… calendula, the marigold-like flower whose extract is commonly used in skin lotions. It’s said to have skin healing properties and can also help to reduce pain and inflammation. You can find calendula products, such as soaps, oils and lotions at health food stores.
