Heartbreak for Rachel Hunter

The mother of Kiwi supermodel Rachel Hunter has died.

Hunter, 47, posted the news of Janeen Phillips' death online, writing: "The beauty that surrounded that moment was a moment only she could have created.

"Yes, there was so much pain in her last 18 months; but we will never forget the force of beauty, fire, protectiveness, empathy, strength, and of course the realm of magic that exists in and around her."

Phillips had been suffering from cancer.

Hunter had charted her mother's final weeks online, including one post about how she and son Liam were sleeping on the floor of the hospital bedroom to be with her. "Liam & I sleep here at night, as many have before to be with their sick loved ones, while the rest of the family gets rest for what the next day might bring," she wrote. "The night calls with Renee to keep her updated on Mums condition. Experiencing the care from the network of nurses & doctors. It's a time to process the grief. An incredibly special time to nurture, listen, love and devote to Mum."

Among the hundreds commenting on Hunter's Facebook page was broadcaster Kerre McIvor, who wrote: "The way you were all able to be together in death defines what it means to have a successful life. Nothing matters, except love and family, and for your beautiful mother to have the people who mattered most with her while she went through this stage will have strengthened and sustained her just as it will have strengthened and sustained you all. Much love xxx"
