Blowing out birthday cake candles has disgusting consequences

New research has suggested blowing out the candles on your birthday cake has some disgusting consequences that might just put you off a slice at your next party.

A study published in the Journal of Food Research found that this much-loved tradition actually increases the amount of bacteria on a cake by 1,400 per cent.

“Some people blow on the cake and they don't transfer any bacteria,” study co-author Paul Dawson explained to The Atlantic. “Whereas you have one or two people who really for whatever reason ... transfer a lot of bacteria.”

The study’s authors were quick to point out that the transfer or oral bacteria didn’t necessarily indicate that taking a slice of birthday cake was going to make you sick.

“It's not a big health concern in my perspective,” Dawson added. “In reality if you did this 100,000 times, then the chance of getting sick would probably be very minimal.”
