This Seniors Health Card discount could save you 35% on your electricity bills

We’re about to enter the hottest part of the year, and while for some that means fun in the sun, swimming at the beach and family barbeques, for others, it means budget-busting energy bills.

But did you know you may be eligible for an electricity discount of up to 35 per cent? If you’re a Seniors Health Card holder living in Victoria, not only can you receive 17.5 per cent off, but if you suffer an illness that affects your body’s ability to regulate temperature, you may be eligible for an extra 17.5 per cent off.

Illnesses such as multiple sclerosis, lymphoedema, Parkinson’s, fibromyalgia, post-polio syndrome, motor neurone disease, scleroderma and lupus can impair the body’s natural thermostat, leaving sufferers heavily reliant on air conditioners in sweltering heat and heaters in the bitter cold. If left in the wrong ambient temperature, these people may find themselves hospitalised due to complications.

To find out if you are eligible, call the Concessions Information Line for free on 1800 658 521 or contact your energy provider to apply. You will need your doctor to sign off the forms before the discount can be applied, and your electricity provider will need to check your concession details with Centrelink.

Similar rebates are available around the country, so visit your state government’s website to find out more.
