Target slammed for releasing new "sexist" toys

Department store Target has been slammed by loyal fans for releasing a new line of toys that have been branded by many online commentators as “sexist”.

Critics of the Young Ones My First Carry Along Medical Centre and Beauty Studio, which retails for $12, believe the manufacturer’s colour choice when creating the products reinforces gender stereotypes.

“Make sure those girls know their place in the world asap heh @Targetaus?” asked one commenter. “What an absolute crock!”

Broadcaster Tracey Spicer even weighed in online, writing, “WTF ...? Come on @Targetaus you can do better than stocking this sexist crap.”

While Target is yet to release an official statement, the retailer has been addressing individual tweets from customers who are concerned about the product.

“We want to assure our customers that we absolutely agree that children of any gender can enjoy whatever toy they like!” read one such response from Target’s twitter.

What are your thoughts? Do you think releasing a product in this manner is a stuff-up on Target’s part? Or are these complaints much ado about nothing?
