Major Aussie supermarket named and shamed in Choice Shonky Awards

A major Australian supermarket has been named and shamed in the 2017 version of the Choice Shonky Awards, as well as seven additional Australian companies.

Coles earned a lemon from the consumer watchdog for labelling a popular tinned cat food product as “complete”, despite being unable to meet any pet’s nutritional needs.

Choice said, “With a name like Coles Complete Cuisine, you'd be forgiven for assuming this product is a nutritionally 'complete' food. But based on the small print on the back of the can, it's likely this tinned treat would be too low in fat to qualify as a 'complete' food.

“In order to be complete the product has to meet certain requirements such as a particular calcium to phosphorus ratio (amounts of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and sodium – not too much or too little), and minimum protein, fat and taurine content.”

Coles was just one of the companies to cop it from the consumer watchdog, with Viagogo, Vita Gummies and Cuddly among the other businesses mentioned.

Choice chief executive Alan Kirkland said this year’s iteration of the awards was proof many companies are still offering consumers poor value for money.

“Whether it’s for targeting the unborn with a poor value savings account, financially exploiting those in pain or chipping away at kids’ teeth with dodgy vitamin products, this year’s winners deserve their awards,” Mr Kirkland said.

“For those eight companies that sank to the bottom in this year’s awards, they now have an opportunity to follow the lead of previous recipients such as Ikea and Qantas and clean up their act.”
