Everyday items that are more expensive after the budget

When the Federal Budget comes out it’s easy to focus on the major changes announced by the Government, and gloss over the tiny ones. But in the end of the day, it’s the tiny ones that really make life more expensive for many everyday Australians.

Buzzfeed has outlined a range of everyday products that are about to become more after this year’s Federal Budget. And we think you’re going to be quite surprised:

  1. Bananas – Smoothies, banana bread and banana splits are about to become a little more expensive, with the price of bananas rising half a cent per kilo. This is at the request of the Australian Banana Growers Council, and the money raised will be used to pay back the $3 million given by the Government to cope with Panama disease.
  2. “Roll your own” tobacco – Inner city hipsters will bemoan the new levy on “roll your own” tobacco, which will see these products taxed at the same rate as pre-rolled cigarettes.
  3. Tea tree oil – Anyone buying these products can expect to face a levy of 25 cents per kilo, which will reportedly be put towards future research and development.
  4. Avocados – There’s also a tiny new surcharge to be introduced with avocados, with a 0.1 cent levy to be put towards plant health, research and development.

So there are four everyday items that will be oddly affected by the Federal Budget. Do you think the changes are fair? And what’s your broader impression of budget?
