Coles makes shopping easier for people with autism

Two Coles supermarkets have introduced a “Quiet Hour” in their stores to make shopping easier for people with autism.

The Victorian supermarkets are trialling a “low sensory shopping experience” between 10.30am-11.30am Tuesdays until the end of October.

In partnership with Autism Spectrum Australia, the Ringwood and Balwyn East Coles will dim lights by 50 per cent, reduce radio volume, avoid trolley collections and offer free fruit at customer service.

The stores will also remove roll cages from the ship floor, lower register and scanner volumes and provide trained team members to assist customers.

Coles accessibility sponsor Peter Sheean said it was a way to “meet the differing needs” of customers, aimed to keep them and staff “comfortable”.

He hopes to create a “no-judgement” shopping space for people and families on the autism spectrum.

A study conducted earlier this year by Autism Spectrum Australia found Tuesday morning was the most popular time for the people with autism and their carers to do shopping.

The study also found bright lights is the most common obstacle for people with autism, as well as music, register beeps and queuing.

Shoppers who don’t have autism are still able to shop during Quiet Hour.
