Amazon reveals its first Australian location

International online retail giant Amazon has taken new steps towards its highly-anticipated Australian launch, announcing its first location. It has been confirmed that a 24,000 square metre “fulfilment centre” will be opened in Dandenong South in Victoria.

Located in Pellicano’s M2 Industry Park, the site was chosen for its proximity to major highways connecting it to Melbourne CBD, 31km away, bringing speedy deliveries to customers.

According to 9Finance, the centre “will serve as the engine room of picking and packing for delivery to Australian buyers,” and is expected to generate hundreds of new local jobs, including operation management, packing and human resources.

“This is just the start,” revealed Robert Bruce, Amazon’s director of operations in Australia. “Over time, we will bring thousands of new jobs to Australia and millions of dollars of investment, as well as opening up the opportunity for thousands of Australian businesses to sell at home and abroad through Amazon Marketplace.”

The move has been welcomed by Victoria’s Industry Minister, Wade Noonan, who is encouraging other international businesses to follow in Amazon’s footsteps.

“Amazon is the latest global company to choose Victoria for its Australian operations,” he said. “The company's decision to locate its centre in Dandenong South will create hundreds of local jobs and open up retail opportunities for thousands of local businesses.”
