8 kitchen tricks that will save you money

Get more from your food with these smart kitchen tricks that will make your produce last longer and save you money.

1. Freeze leftover wine to use in recipes that call for a splash of wine.

2. Stop brown sugar from turning hard by adding a couple of marshmallows to the bag.

3. Onions and garlic need to breathe to stay their freshest so store in ventilated paper bags.

4. Turn vegetables that are no longer fresh enough to eat raw into homemade veggie chips.

5. Stop potatoes from sprouting or shrivelling by storing an apple in your potato sack.

6. Make bananas last longer by wrapping the crown of a bunch with cling wrap.

7. Dry leftover fresh herbs in the microwave.

8.  Wrap celery, broccoli and lettuce in aluminium foil before storing in the fridge – it will stay crisper for a couple more week. 

9. Store asparagus like flowers in a vase. It will keep them looking and tasting fresh for up to two weeks.
