$6 thrifty design hack from Kmart that could save you hundreds of dollars

A group of mothers online have shared a thrifty hack from Kmart that could save you hundreds of dollars.

The avid Kmart shoppers have revealed how you can transform the $6 fruit bowl into a decorative light fitting.

The women, who are members of the Facebook group Kmart Mums Australia, started hanging the bowl from their ceilings in an attempt to decorate their plain light bulbs.

Some glued two bowls together and added fairy lights or plants, to make the feature piece look even more trendy.

Queensland mother Antonietta Bergamin was one of the first to create the viral trend.

“Just the globe looked unattractive, so I measured the circumference of the globe and looked for something that could be placed over the end of it, and simply screwed it back into the ceiling,” the 43-year-old mum told news.com.au.

“The bowl only cost $6. If I had to get a completely new fitting for the ceiling that would have involved an electrician’s cost and a light fitting — so in the vicinity of $200 or more.”

She also used the bowl to create a matching lampshade.

“In the real world people may not be in a position to renovate as it comes at a cost — hacking can lift any room and there is so much out there to be creative with, while also being dollar-conscious.”

Another member of the community praised the design trick for its affordability.

“For those who have not seen the Kmart fruit bowl lamp shade hack I thought I'd share it again, as it really does work,” one woman wrote on the page.

“And even better, they are now also available in gold, for those who don't like the black.

“Our home looks like we've gone to a lighting shop and purchased all matching shades, while literally saving potentially hundreds of dollars in the process.”

That is not the only hack Kmart fans have created using fruit bowls.

Earlier this year, another Kmart hack went viral after a mum complained that her fruit bowl was constantly overflowing.

One person shared how you could create a ‘double-decker’ fruit bowl using two $6 fruit bowls and a $5 plant stand.

“Cheap, fits heaps and the kids can reach it – easy as,” one mum said about the trick.
