Third fatal brawl on Melbourne streets in two weeks

A man has died and four have been arrested after a brawl in Melbourne’s southeast on Monday night.

Homicide detectives are investigating the incident, which took place just before 8pm near the entrance to Eaton Mall on Atherton Road in Oakleigh.

Thomas Tran, 20, died at the scene.

Tran’s partner Trish Nguyen remembers the Springvale man as a “dreamer” with “the goofiest laugh”.

“He has a smile that when you look at it you just admire how great it looked,” Nguyen said.

“He loves his family, loves his friends – he’s just a great guy and he didn’t deserve that.”

The four people who were arrested have been released pending further inquiries, the Herald Sun reported.

It was the third fatal brawl on Melbourne’s streets in the past two weeks.

Last Monday, 21-year-old Machar Kot died after being stabbed outside a Melbourne CBD hotel. Marco Deng has been charged with Kot’s murder.

Teenager Solomone Taufeulungaki died in Deer Park on June 16 after being ambushed on his way home from school. Seven boys aged between 13 and 16 have been charged with affray over the Deer Park brawl.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
