Police break into car to save boy, 3, as dad was at the pub

A father-of-two is behind bars after he left his three-year-old son in a hot car and another toddler home alone while he drank at a pub in Sydney’s south-west.

Police were called to the Hume Highway in Yagoona, NSW, about 3.40pm yesterday after the public reported seeing a three-year-old boy in distress in the car.

"As soon as we saw him, we were like, oh my god, do we break the window, are we allowed to do that? So we just rang the police straight away," Barber Issa Khadem, who first spotted the child from inside his shop, told 9NEWS.

Officers were forced to break into the 43-year-old man’s car to rescue the boy, who needed to be treated for mild dehydration.

The boy’s father was found at the nearby pub and arrested.

When the boy’s mother arrived to pick up her son, it was revealed the man had also left his two-year-old son alone at his Yagoona home.

Both children were taken to Bankstown Hospital for assessment. Family and Community Services have been notified of the incident.

NSW had one of its hottest spring days yesterday, with Sydney’s reaching tops of 32.2 degrees, more than 12 degrees above the September average.

The father appeared in Parramatta Local Court today. He was denied bail ahead of his next court appearance in Bankstown Court on Tuesday.
