Man jailed for two years over brutal Woolies assault

Gold Coast father Zebu Kane Pomare has been sentenced to two years behind bars after being captured on CCTV punching a man for getting in his way in a Woolworths store in a brutal and unprovoked attack.

The assault took place in the Australia Fair Southport store on January 5, 2022. CCTV footage of the attack shows 31-year-old Pomare shoving the stranger with his trolley after they cross paths at the end of an aisle, and then proceeding to strike him in the face before continuing on his way.

The victim of the assault fell to the floor as other shoppers rushed over to help him.

“You struck him in an unprovoked way, just because he was in your way,” said Magistrate Dzenita Balic, addressing the SouthPort Magistrates court on Monday August 22.

“You didn’t care who was there. You simply struck him.

“Your behaviour is simply unacceptable.”

Pomare also spat at two police officers while in custody for the attack.

The incident occurred when police attempted to restrain him during an episode of uncontrolled anger, Magistrate Balic said. “You laughed and said, ‘gotcha, gotcha, gotcha, got ya dog c****’.”

Pomare pleaded guilty to assault and grievous bodily harm charges, with Magistrate Balic determining that the two-year jail sentence was the only “appropriate” punishment for such an offence.
