Drivers can be penalised up to $344 and hit with three demerit points for placing bumper stickers on their rear window or hanging fluffy dice from their rear-view mirror.
The ludicrous road rule bans any type of car accessory that may obstruct the driver’s vision and cause a potential accident.
Confirming to Daily Mail Australia, police and road safety groups said the items can be considered an offence – and authorities are now keeping an eye out for these “driver distraction” offences.
The following items are not strictly forbidden but could attract a fine if police believe they’re a distraction: Air fresheners, flags and toys.
Also, having a GPS located on the lower right or lower centre of the windscreen could attract a fine for similar reasons.
South Australian Police’s traffic commander, Superintendent Bob Gray, said authorities are on the lookout for driver distraction.
“Mobile phones, GPS devices and other technology or items in the car can be a major distraction for drivers and divert their attention from the task at hand,” he said.
“When mounting your GPS display or adding any decorative items, like fluffy dice or stickers, consider whether it will obscure your vision. It is important that drivers have a clear view of the road, to the front, back and sides, at all times.”
Motorists who are caught driving while distracted will be penalised $193 plus a $60 contribution to the victims of crime levy.
