How to prepare your home for winter

It’s safe to say most of us have a love-hate relationship with winter. On the one hand, it means hearty stews, cosy blankets and warm baths. On the other, it means skyrocketing electricity bills and being freezing cold after a shower. For all of us, however, one thing is essential – we all need to prepare our homes for the frigid conditions.

To help you get everything ready for those cool days and brisk nights, we’ve put together a short, easy checklist for you to follow.

1. Window coverings – If you opt for light, sheer curtains during summer, it’s time to invest in some thick, layered curtains or insulated blinds. It’s an easy DIY job that only requires a trip to the hardware or interiors store and an hour of your time.

2. Get textural – In the warmer months, anything that can retain heat (think woolly blankets, thick rugs and even cushions is packed up and put away. Winter is the perfect time to introduce thick knitted throws and plush fabrics back into your home, covering any hard floors with warm rugs and mats.

3. Sort out your heating – Reverse-cycle air conditioners are the most cost-effective way to heat your home (particularly large areas), but ensure they are serviced and cleaned regularly to remain in good working order. If you’re too strapped for cash for an expensive unit, electric space heaters are cheap to buy and can be incredibly effective.

4. Update your insurance – With winter often comes wild, unpredictable weather. Plus, all those extra heating devices plugged in can increase your risk of experiencing a house fire. Give yourself peace of mind by ensuring you have a comprehensive home and contents insurance policy so you’ll be covered if the worst should happen.

5. Swap bedding – Cotton sheets are breathable and perfect for summer, but you might need something a bit warmer during winter. If you don’t want to go down the heated blanket route, flannelette sheets and quilt covers can be just as effective.

6. Firewood – If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace, now’s the time to stock up on firewood. Keep it in a dry place and replenish it after every few uses – this way you’ll never run out when you need the warmth the most.
