Dash cam smash horror – elderly couple left for dead on Queensland highway

Dashcam footage has captured the moment teenagers in allegedly stolen cars caused a horrific car accident before fleeing the scene.

An elderly couple, aged 69 and 72, were driving along Bruce Highway near Townsville, when a stolen car sped past a truck on the wrong side of the road.

Moments later, a second stolen car following in the wrong lane uncontrollably swerved out of the lane to avoid colliding with an oncoming truck. The car then crashed at high speed into the rear of the elderly couple’s car.

Both cars crashed into the side of the road, with the victims' car flipping multiple times.

On Monday, footage of the horrific incident was released by Queensland Police.

Alongside the video, Queensland Police Service wrote, “Police have released dashcam vision of an alleged stolen vehicle involved in a serious high speed traffic crash on the Bruce Highway near Coolbie on December 22. Two teenagers have been charged in relation to the incident, anyone with further information is urged to come forward.”

Police said those responsible for the crash fled the scene without checking on the victims.

They have since charged two 16-year-old boys.

Detective Inspector Leonie Steyger told the Townsville Bulletin that the crash was an “inexcusable event”.

The elderly couple were fighting for their lives but have since been released from hospital.
